Opera integrates cyscon’s security software to protect German users from phishing attacks

Opera Software is now offering a new, integrated security solution in its browsers to protect German users from phishing attacks, thanks to an agreement with cyscon, a company specializing in online security.

Cyscon’s solution consists of an anti-phishing feed, PhishKiller, which is specifically geared toward the German language, adding more security to Opera’s existing fraud and malware protection feature. To protect sensitive data, PhishKiller also recommends complementary security solutions, among them XLAB’s application Device Monitor. It is intended for Android users and upon clicking a phishing link, embedded in the e-mail, the source is checked using the cyscon’s security report system.

Opera is the first browser to integrate cyscon’s feed, providing German users with an additional layer of online security.

Phishing is electronic communication that masquerades as being from a trustworthy entity in an effort to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit-card details for malicious reasons.

“Phishing is a serious problem these days. It damages the trust that customers place in brand names,” says Thomas George, Director of Digital Strategy, cyscon. “Through a widespread network of data sensors, we can help both companies and users detect cyberthreats and stay protected online.”

Germans concerned about increasing cybercrime

According to a survey from the European Union on cyber security perception, 90% of the German respondents believe the risk of becoming a victim of cybercrime is increasing. Moreover, 91% avoid disclosing personal information online, while 58% are concerned about someone misusing their personal data. With its PhishKiller solution, cyscon aims to improve the awareness and mitigate the danger of phishing attacks for the German-speaking internet community.

“Online security has always been a priority for Opera, and we are always on the lookout for new solutions to improve our security offerings and provide the safest web experience to our users,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software, “Our collaboration with cyscon fits in perfectly with this vision and will provide additional peace of mind to our German users.”

Recently, Opera acquired SurfEasy Inc., a leading online-privacy company that provides an easy-to-use VPN solution for protecting customers’ online privacy and security on smartphones, tablets and computers. Today’s announcement is another step toward expanding Opera’s offerings in online security and privacy and taking them to the next level.
