The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of continuity of vital services and the need to work together for the common good. It has proven that a pandemic is not just a health crisis and that it does not just disrupt Critical Infrastructures (CIs), but that there is an extremely important link between CIs resilience and our society. The economic crisis triggered by the pandemic also presents a unique opportunity to work together to recover with a focus on sustainability and green recovery.

SUNRISE facilitates active collaboration of CIs across Europe to share best practices and jointly tackle future pandemics. The project takes into account legal, ethical, societal, economic, and climate aspects to ensure that our outcomes meet not only the needs of the CIs, but also those of our society. At the end of the project, this collaboration will result in a new stable working group for resilience to pandemics with at least 100 members.

The SUNRISE project

  • identifies pandemic-specific vital services and CIs, their dependencies, risks, cascading effects, and effective measures to tackle them,
  • develops a comprehensive strategy and four innovative tools to ensure better pandemic-specific vital services,
  • tests the results in operational environments of the CIs while tackling some of their biggest pain points exposed by the current pandemic,
  • promotes our approach across Europe to ensure a united front and resilience of CIs to pandemics.

XLAB’s role

XLAB is responsible for development of a two-stage, multi-modal, multi-purpose, continuous and cost-effective physical infrastructure inspection solution. Additionally, XLAB is supporting the development of a tool for robust, adaptable AI-based anomaly detection and a tool for data-driven energy demand prediction. Finally, XLAB acts as the data manager for the entire consortium.
