OnMoveID reimagines how travellers cross Schengen external borders. Instead of stopping at a booth, travellers are identified while they move — through an extended European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet on their smartphone, combined with external sensors deployed at the border crossing point.
The project builds, integrates and pilots a border-control system that keeps checks lawful, accurate and privacy-respecting while removing the queue. It extends the EUDI Wallet with the attributes and flows border authorities need, pairs it with on-site biometric and sensing hardware, and validates the full stack across three operational pilots in Slovakia, Finland and the United Kingdom.
Why it matters:
Border crossings are a pinch point for both security and traveller experience. As passenger volumes grow and the EUDI Wallet rolls out across Member States, border authorities need identity verification that is fast, trustworthy, and legally sound under GDPR and the EU border acquis. OnMoveID shows how the Wallet can carry its weight at the physical border — reducing friction for travellers while giving guards the assurance they need.
XLAB leads system integration and testing (WP8), bringing together components from 15 partners into a working, deployable system. We own the secure cloud data management and edge-to-cloud computing layer built around the EUDI Wallet framework, and act as Technical Leader for the pilots — translating partner research into something that runs on real hardware, at a real border, under real operational conditions.
